The Walled Off Hotel in Bethlehem is the first and only hotel worldwide by the famous graffiti artist Banksy. It is a unique work of art and is intended to bring visitors closer to the feeling of occupation and depression.
The hotel as a social project
The economic side of the hotel has been a secret so far. The Walled Off Hotel can only survive because Banksy puts a lot of money into it. Work is currently underway to make the hotel profitable. It is a social project and an attempt to strengthen the region in the long term. Even if the hotel becomes profitable, Banksy won't make a dime out of it. He has a heart for the local people and supports them with his project.
It opened its gates in the world's largest outdoor prison in March 2017. It is easy to see which side Banksy has more sympathy for.
At the entrance gate of the hotel, a monkey and the friendly doorman greet the guests. The facade was painted by Banksy himself in a night and fog action.
The museum
From the piano bar on the ground floor you can enjoy the view of the wall with a cold beer.
On the ground floor there is also a very interesting and informative small museum where the conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians is described and explained in more detail. A visit is worthwhile even if you are not a guest of the hotel!
The gallery
There is a small art gallery above the lobby where pictures and art installations by local artists are exhibited and sold.
