Israel built the wall in 2002/3, at the height of the second Palestinian uprising. That was a full 13 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall. The wall was intended to keep suicide bombers away from the West Bank of Israel. There are also control towers, barbed wire and video surveillance systems. Passports and entry permits are strictly controlled when passing the checkpoint into Israel. There is no wall to the south and east. Residents can move freely within the Palestinian Territories.
The Palestinians consider the wall illegal because it runs in their territory that was occupied by Israel. The UN also classified the wall as violating international law. The wall served its purpose for the Israelis. Since then the number of attacks has decreased.

This wall is by no means a pleasant place. It is worth a visit as a depressing testimony to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, and it is decorated with numerous highly artificial graffiti that is well worth seeing.

Just opposite this corner of the wall is the "Wi'am - Agape" Center for Nonviolence and Conflict Resolution. It is worth visiting this organization, which is committed to non-violence and is involved in Palestinian society with its own mediation programs. Zougbhi Zoughbi, the director of the centre, is a very interesting and sought-after interlocutor.
