    The sculptural group "Las Meninas" (court maids) by the Spanish artist Manolo Valdés has found a place in the courtyard garden on the corner of Jägerhof and Jacobistraße since summer 2007.
    The four court garden ladies are part of a twenty-one figure group that was placed on the median of Heinrich-Heine-Allee during the first Düsseldorf Quadrienale in 2006. The artist gave two figures as gifts, two more were bought by the city.
    The title and shape of the figures refer to a famous painting by the Spanish baroque painter Diego Velazques. In it the painter reflects on the possibilities and variants of figurative forms, images and images.
    For René Magritte, the great Belgian painter of the relationship between existence and appearance, the Meninas are "the visible image of the invisible thought of Velazques".
    Based on this thought, one can speak of the Valdes figures of the Meninas as a tangible approximation to the incomprehensible image.

      If you walk into Reitallee from Schloss Jägerhof, you will see a group of figures on your left - and you will feel as if you have been transported to baroque Spain. One of the most famous Spanish paintings shows the ladies of the court (Las Meninas) by Diego Velázquez. The dresses of the sculpture women and children resemble the sweeping baroque dresses of the painting hanging in the Prado Museum in Madrid.

      It is precisely this group of figures that one seems to observe while strolling through the courtyard garden: royal children with their nannies and maidservants playing and going for a walk.

      Significantly, the group of bronze sculptures by Manolo Valdés also bears the name “Las Meninas”. The artist, who comes from Spain and lives in New York, does not yet have a German entry in Wikipedia - but one in English.

      This group of sculptures is reminiscent of the baroque court, as also led by Elector Jan Wellem in Düsseldorf. Were the clothes so expansive in Düsseldorf back then?
