The building at Breite Straße 25 in Düsseldorf was built as the Düsseldorf headquarters of the Barmer Bankverein from 1911 to 1912 according to designs by Carl Moritz and Werner Stahl in the neoclassical style[1]. The facades of the building are listed buildings.
The original core of the bank building is a single-storey corner building with a recessed attic floor with a tempietto on the corner of Benrather Straße and Breite Straße, which is enclosed on both sides by a four-storey, three-axis angled building. The ground floor zone of the tempietto is made up of three arches with figure niches above, alternating with fluted colossal pilasters. The second floor is a round building (tambour) with a dome vault, with the substructure designed with a column wreath based on the ancient round temple model.
The facades of the single-storey corner building from 1912 are divided into three axes on Benrather Straße and six axes on Breite Straße. These show fluted, wide colossal pilasters with recessed window fields and two windows on top of each other on the base and ground floor. The upper end is formed by a surrounding stone balustrade. Two stone figures by the sculptors Georg Grasegger and Josef Moest - resting on pillars - are placed in front of the parapet.
In 1924, the architects Carl Moritz and Albert Betten extended the four-storey part on Benrather Strasse to the west as far as Kasernenstrasse, creating a symmetrical thirteen-axis, four-storey facade. In 1951, the building was rebuilt after war damage. In 1956, the roof was expanded to a staggered storey typical of the time, although the seven-axis middle section of the wing on Benrather Strasse was increased by two full floors. In order to expand the building complex, a twelve-storey high-rise was built on Kasernenstrasse opposite the old building between 1962 and 1965, based on designs by the architect Paul Schneider-Esleben. The two buildings were connected by a closed pedestrian bridge crossing Kasernenstrasse. The ticket hall was rebuilt in 1966 (by Hentrich and Petschnigg) and again in 1992 (by Helmut Kohl and Stadler Projekt GmbH).
