A striking address, a venerable building. The Düsseldorf town hall, built by Heinrich Tussmann, has stood at Marktplatz 1, the north side of the central market square, for almost 450 years.
A lot of water has flowed down the Rhine since then, no wonder that the town hall has been renovated and expanded several times over the centuries. The “Grupello Building” followed in 1705 and around 180 years later, i.e. three centuries after the first building, was the “Wilhelminian Building”. built. Another wing of the building ensemble, Marktplatz 6, dates from the post-war period. Governing from the heart of the old town and therefore close to the citizens - this tradition has lived on here for centuries. There is a particularly high level of community proximity around Christmas time: then the market square around the Jan Wellem equestrian monument is the romantic backdrop for the Düsseldorf Christmas market.

Until 1806, the oldest parts of the building, the Old Town Hall, also served as a meeting place for the estates of the Duchies of Jülich-Berg.[1] The main entrance and the representative view are on the market square enclosed by the town hall. The first building in Düsseldorf in which the city council met was probably opposite the Lambertus Church and was the old customs house. The second town hall was known as the “Zum Schwarzen Horn” house, which is located at Ratinger Straße 6 and served as the town hall from 1470 to 1544. In 1545 the city acquired a building on the market square for the lay judges and the council, which was replaced by a new building after 1570.
