The artwork of canal herring, which move freely in the wind and thus appear to float through the air, is intended to commemorate the former importance of the Stecknitz River for Lübeck. Salt was transported along it from the Lüneburg graduation towers to Lübeck, where the herring were preserved.

This is still classic mechanical engineering. Of course everything was renewed at some point, but the beginnings of this technology date back to around 1900. The canal once had great economic importance, especially for Lübeck. Today the canal is important for recreational shipping. Freight traffic via this canal has decreased drastically as only smaller cargo ships carrying up to 1000 tons of cargo can pass through it.

One of the locks on the Stecknitz Canal. This in Berkenthin is very easy to access. Both for cyclists, but also for those on foot, without having to hike for ages (parking is very close). So if you want to amaze the kids with some technology and watch the ships float up and down - this is a good place to do it.
