Upon arriving in Avolsheim in Alsace, Maternus is said to have collapsed from exhaustion, whereupon his companions became discouraged and returned to Rome. Peter, however, gave them his shepherd's crook, with which they traveled back to Alsace. With the help of this crook, they revived Maternus, who had already been in his grave for six weeks.
