Beautiful view after a difficult single trail through tall, confusing vegetation with blackberries and nettles, and some pushing!

From the campsite north of the lake and along the eastern shore, there's a forest path around the lake. The path is unpaved and, in places, very dusty. This path is shared with pedestrians, so it can be busy on nice weekends, so please be considerate of others.

Mofettes at Lake Laach demonstrate: The Laacher See volcano, Europe's youngest, didn't go extinct 13,000 years ago; it's just dormant. That's what volcanologists say. And indeed, on the eastern shore of the lake, it's bubbling like a glass of mineral water. Mass amounts of CO2 bubbles rise here, and there's a faint smell of sulfur. While walking around Lake Laach and then visiting the abbey, you can put together an entire year's calendar from countless great photos.

"Lake Laach is the largest lake in Rhineland-Palatinate and a popular tourist destination. In summer, a dip in the cool water is a tempting experience, and there are exciting things to discover on the eastern shore of the lake. Small bubbles rise up in the water - these so-called mofettes are rising carbon dioxide and illustrate the volcanic history of the lake (which, however, is not a maar like other volcanic lakes in the Eifel). About 13,000 years ago, there were several massive eruptions of the Laacher See volcano. First, rising magma hit water-bearing layers and triggered a steam explosion. In the following eruption phase, several ash columns formed - similar to Vesuvius - the ash from which spread widely across Europe. However, there were interruptions during this eruption. This led to the ash columns collapsing and becoming hot streams of embers. The streams of embers flowed into the valleys towards Brohltal and Pellenz and filled them up. The cooled lava flows are called trass. Today you can visit trass caves in the Brohltal and also an old Roman mine in which the material was mined near Meurin. There was another eruption of the volcano, in which basalt blocks were blasted out of older lava rocks surrounding the volcano. These basalt blocks can be viewed in the Wingertsberg wall near Mendig..." MORE INFORMATION: https://www.eifel.info/laacher-see-und-maria-laach

The Laacher See area is of volcanic origin🌋. The oval Laacher See 🌊 is the largest lake in Rhineland-Palatinate with around 3.3 km² and a water depth of more than 50 m. The Laacher See and the surrounding lands are owned by the Maria Laach Abbey⛪️. From a scientific point of view, however, the Laacher See is not a maar or a real crater lake, but a water-filled caldera - a crater that was created by a collapse after the magma chamber below the volcanic cone was emptied. Small bubbles rise up in the water - these so-called mofettes are rising carbon dioxide and illustrate the volcanic history of the lake🌋.
