The name Slangenburg has nothing to do with snakes, but with the Slingebeek stream that meanders through the landscape here. It was once called the "Slingeburcht," but over time, this was corrupted to Slangenburg. Thus, the estate bears the name of the stream that has been winding its way through here for centuries.

This name is rightly called... a true Koningslaan, incredibly beautiful stately trees, long avenue and straight as an arrow.

Castle Slangenburg was first mentioned in 1354 as the property of Maes (Thomas) van Baer. In 1585 it was destroyed by the troops of the States General and could only be rebuilt during the Twelve Years' Truce, and in the 17th century the castle became the property of General Frederik Johan van Baer (1645-1713), who rebuilt it for residential purposes. In the 18th century it came into the possession of the Steengracht family, and in 1781 it passed to the Van der Goltz family, who managed it until 1863, before the Van der Goltz heirs sold it in 1895. The last private owners, since 1895 the Passmann family (Herrmann Paßmann), were a German entrepreneur family. The members of this family are buried in the private cemetery behind the car park. After the war, all German property was confiscated and the castle and the buildings within the outer moat became the property of the Dutch state.

1月 17, 2024, De Waag Doesburg
The historic city center of Doesburg feels like going back in time. The showpiece on the market is De Waag. The building, originally known as 'Nieuw Gelre' or 'Het Hoge Huis Gelria', dates from 1478. Initially it functioned as a city beer house, an inn where the city's workers also received part of their wages in the form of beer. . Later it was also used as a weighing house. Nowadays it shines again in its former glory as a café-restaurant, making it the oldest restaurant in the Netherlands! In Doesburg you will find 150 monuments that embellish the city center.

In the Doesburgse Waag you can not only taste the tastiest dishes, but also the history. De Waag is even the oldest café in the Netherlands! As far back as the Middle Ages, merchants settled here for a nice drink with a hot meal, or they stayed the night in the inn. Go back in time, but enjoy meals from today.

11月 12, 2023, Doesburg Stadsbierhuys De Waag
Here 'de Waag' was apparently combined with a general 'Doesburg' highlight. Unfortunately, many photos and tips no longer fit the title. De Waag is considered the oldest restaurant in the country and beyond this title competition it is a beautiful medieval building on the central square of Doesburg. Especially in summer you can sit outside and enjoy a refreshment with a view of the similarly beautiful Stadshuis opposite.

8月 21, 2023, Bronkhorst
Bronkhorst........the smallest town in the Netherlands! Just 150 residents, but lots of opportunities to get rid of your money. *grin* The hotel restaurant “De Gouden Leeuw” is highly recommended. It's a little higher in price, but it's worth the money! The staff was super friendly and helpful, the rooms were very clean and the food in the restaurant was absolutely TOP!!

8月 5, 2023, Slangenburg Castle
Good news, May 2024 update: starting with Pentecost weekend, the cafés and restaurants at the coach house will be open again on weekends. The castle can also be visited on weekends – tickets and more information are available at https://www.kasteelslangenburg.nl/. You can also still visit 't Onland (https://hetonland.nl/). Taverne Edelweiss closed on October 1, 2025. I don't know if new owners will be taking over, and if so, when.

On the route Doesburg - Zupthen you shouldn't drive past the pretty village of Bronkhorst, with its old, beautiful houses.

Beautiful endlessly long sloping beech avenue. Where the path rises or falls, the roots protruding above the ground form a natural staircase.

The visit to the monastery with a monastery tour was unique. Brother Curt was able to give us a lot of information about life in the monastery.

A long, straight, challenging avenue in the oldest forests of the Veluwezoom. I walked up Koningslaan. It is quite a climb up, but when you reach the top the view is a nice one. The forest behind me is a dense and somewhat dark oak forest.

Can a small town with around 150 inhabitants call itself a city? Yes, it can! At least when it is called Bronkhorst: because the district of the municipality of Bronckhorst (note: with ck!) was actually granted town rights in the 15th century. And it seems as if time has stood still here since then: Bronkhorst enchants its visitors with its winding streets, cobblestones, historic farms and the medieval castle chapel. The place is on the east bank of the IJssel, about 15 km south of Zutphen. There is a car ferry to Brummen. The place is agricultural. There is some tourism, there are some picturesque streets and farms, a small Charles Dickens museum and a castle chapel built in 1344.
