A document was found in the Zutphen city archives stating that an inn with a sign bearing the name "De Carp" (The Carp) stood in the village of Hummel. These documents indicate that it was once an inn, brewery, and agricultural business. Guests could stable their horses there, enjoy a simple meal, and spend the night. The inn was situated on a dirt road, and travel consisted of horse and cart. Over hundreds of years, the business has grown into one of the Netherlands' most renowned hospitality establishments, where guests are pampered to the utmost.
