The crossing shouldn't be too difficult, but the enemy threw a wrench in the works, twice. The local population never forgot the sacrifice. On November 2, 1944, the 51st Highland Division was ordered to capture the area north of the drainage canal from 's-Hertogenbosch to Drongelen. Operation Guy Fawkes was carefully planned. Soldiers from the neighboring battalion were supposed to keep an eye on things, but they were just too late. Fortunately, they managed to bring up new units in time. Unfortunately, the element of surprise had now been lost. This would become tragically clear the next day. At 3:00 PM, the Black Watch were hidden in the bushes at Achterste Distelberg, ready to cross. At Anny's Hoeve, a little further west, the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders was stationed. At 4:35 PM, heavy artillery barraged the Oostelijke Langstraat. Ten minutes later, two battalions to the left and right of the Steegerf began the crossing. Half an hour later, it was the turn of the Black Watch and the Gordon Highlanders. The Black Watch experienced a perilous adventure. German machine guns opened fire, and a Panzerfaust (a hand-held anti-tank weapon) hit the leading boat. Several Scotsmen were hit, and ultimately six were killed. They were temporarily buried in a field grave where a comrade was already buried. After that, the crossing went smoothly. Operation Guy Fawkes was a resounding success, and the entire area was liberated the following evening.
