Beautiful walk along the Almelo - Nordhorn Canal

The Gravenallee has been the driveway to the castle Huize Almelo since around 1700. This avenue forms a green lung that reaches into the centre. The Gravenallee surrounds Huize Almelo and also consists of a hunting lane of 3.5 kilometres long that ends at the Almelo-Nordhorn Canal. In total, the Gravenallee has no less than 16 kilometres of walking and cycling paths and fairytale roads through a varied landscape. The Gravenallee is only crossed by the Van Rechteren Limpurgsingel, which is closed during the special event of a funeral from Huize Almelo.

The Grote Kerk was founded in 1236 as a castle chapel of the Lord of Almelo and became an independent parish church in 1296, dedicated to the saints Georgius and Mauritius. The oldest part of the building that is still present is the choir, built in late Gothic style in 1493, when the church was rebuilt due to dilapidation. In 1738, the church and tower, with the exception of the old choir, were demolished and a new church was built. The spire dates from 1777. It was given this shape, the ‘Welsche Haube’, at the request of the wife of the Lord of Almelo as a reminder of her native region in Franconia. Above the side entrances of the church are the family crests of the van Rechteren family. The interior contains various historically interesting parts, including the particularly beautiful organ, the lord’s pew and the tomb of Adolph Hendrik van Rechteren. There is a crypt under the choir where members of the count’s family were buried after their death until 1830.

A very nice photo opportunity, but I have only seen this church from the outside so far.

In Almelo you often have the opportunity to go on a bike tour along a canal or a river/stream, where you can also take really nice photos.
