St. Lorenz Church in Lorenz Park at the end of the pedestrian zone is the oldest church in the city and, as the mother church of the region, of great historical significance. It was first documented in 1214, but is believed to have been built as early as 1080. Repeatedly rebuilt and renovated, the church today stands as a remarkable example of early 19th-century church architecture. The church's interior dates back to a comprehensive renovation in 1822 in the Neoclassical style. The pulpit altar, in the so-called Margravial style, also dates from this period. The most important works of art are a crucifix (circa 1500) and the valuable "Hertnid von Stein Altarpiece," a late Gothic Franconian winged altarpiece from between 1480 and 1486. It was named after its donor, Hertnid von Stein, Dean of Bamberg Cathedral and parish priest in Hof, and depicts, among other things, St. Lawrence, the patron saint of the church. St. Lorenz Church is an "open church." Dedicated volunteers offer guided tours of the church and tower throughout the year, run the church café, and host picnics and film screenings. The surrounding St. Lorenz Park was transformed into the "Lorenzo Oasis" as part of the church's 800th anniversary celebrations, a project undertaken jointly by the parish and the city of Hof. Foundations, sponsors, and local residents also contributed to the project. https://www.hof.de/leben-erleben/sehenswuerdigkeiten-in-hof/kirchen

The oldest church in Hof (first documented in 1214) and located on the edge of the city center. Situated on a small hill, it's easy to spot.

Today's Lorenzpark served as the cemetery of St. Lorenz Church for centuries. It was expanded several times, but by the 19th century had become too small. From 1879 onward, the site was no longer used as a cemetery. In 1904, the parish donated the area to the city of Hof. Two years later, it became a green space, which was redesigned in 2013 and 2014 to become the current "Stadtoase St. Lorenz" (St. Lorenz City Oasis).

St. Lorenz Church is the nucleus of the city of Hof and the mother church of the region. The parish was first documented in 1214. From this original parish in the former village of Rekkenze, many daughter churches were founded throughout the surrounding area, extending into present-day Saxony, Thuringia, and the Czech Republic. Today, the Evangelical Lutheran congregation of St. Lorenz has approximately 2,200 members and is characterized by a diverse life in Hof's city center. The church was renovated in 2007 and has since once again shines in its traditional colors of white and red.

St. Lorenz Parish Church The parish of St. Lorenz was first documented in 1214. As the oldest church in the city and the mother church of the region, it is of great historical importance and one of Hof's sights. Arguably the most important of Hof's medieval pastors was Hertnid vom Stein, whose year of birth is estimated at 1427. Around the turn of the year 1464/65, Margrave Albrecht granted him the parish of Hof. Most of the margrave churches in Upper Franconia are built in the Baroque or Rococo style. Although the Baroque furnishings in St. Lorenz were removed in 1822, the church is still considered a margrave church today. The pulpit altar is typical of margrave churches; here, the pulpit is integrated into the center of the altar structure; in St. Lorenz, the pulpit "floats" above the altar, so to speak. The interior of the church dates back to a comprehensive renovation in 1822 in the Neoclassical style. The roof truss rests on six enormous oak columns, now covered with stucco marble. Beneath the discreetly decorated coffered ceiling, paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries depict former Lorenz priests on the side walls. Gravestones and wrought-iron grave crosses on the exterior and in the vestibule of the church date from the same period. The most valuable work of art is the late Gothic winged altarpiece, created around 1480, donated by Hertnid vom Stein and taken from St. Michael's Church. On the central panel, Emperor Henry II and his wife Kunigunde hold a model of Bamberg Cathedral; the founder, pastor at Hof and dean of the cathedral in Bamberg, kneels beneath it. On the left-hand panels, St. Catherine and St. Lawrence, on the right-hand panels, the Archangel Michael weighing souls and St. Nicholas. Source: Excerpts from www.lorenzkirche-hof.de
