There are traces of settlements in Spardorf that indicate a pre-Christian settlement.[5] The modifier of the place name is most likely derived from the Middle High German word spar(we) (sparrow, sparrow).[6][7][8] The oldest documented mention of the name Spardorf dates back to 1305. In the action book of the Nuremberg patrician Holzschuher there is the entry "Sibito de Spardorf 1305". At least since the 15th century, the lords of Streitberg in Spardorf owned some estates and forests as imperial fiefdoms.[9] Since 1978, the community has formed the administrative community of Uttenreuth together with three other communities.
