Landwasser Viaduct “142-meter-long and 65-meter-high bridge piers” The 142-meter-long Landwasser Viaduct is the landmark of the Rhaetian Railway. The viaduct sweeps gracefully across the Landwasser Valley, leading directly into the rugged rock face and the Landwasser Tunnel. Landwasser Viaduct of the Rhaetian Railway A must-see for all railway enthusiasts – beauty and boldness combined. With its 65-meter-high, tapered piers, the viaduct is one of the most elegant bridge structures in Graubünden and the most photographed work of art on the Rhaetian Railway. The largest and most spectacular structure on the 63-kilometer-long Albula line between Thusis and St. Moritz. The Albula and Bernina lines of the Rhaetian Railway have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites since mid-July 2008, only the third railway line in the world to receive this distinction. The construction of the three main piers of the viaduct in 1901/1902 was an architectural masterpiece, as they were built without scaffolding using only two cranes. After 106 years, the masonry and track bed were repaired for the first time. The natural stone viaduct, made of limestone dolomite, is 142 meters long and spans the wild Landwasser Valley in a sweeping curve, leading directly into a tunnel whose entrance is located on the sheer rock face. From the village of Filisur, a footpath leads in half an hour to a beautiful viewpoint where the viaduct can be admired (and photographed). The path continues either down to the river, under the viaduct and into the gorge, or, at the fork in the path, to the viewpoint, continuing for two hours to the Wiesner Viaduct. This can also be crossed on foot, offering a unique experience with breathtaking views. Landwasser Viaduct (near Filisur station) The Landwasser Viaduct is a 65-meter-high and long railway bridge. Its pillars rise majestically 65 meters into the air: The Landwasser Viaduct on the Albula line allows the Rhaetian Railway to travel 141.7 meters over the roaring Landwasser River. In a wide curve, the viaduct leads directly into a steep rock face. This breathtaking structure is now the most photographed subject on the Rhaetian Railway line. But the history of the viaduct's construction is also remarkable: The Greek-Swiss engineer Alexander Acatos (1873-1950) was commissioned to design the viaduct. He was also the one who later planned the expansion of Zurich's main train station for the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB). Under Acatos's direction, the five limestone piers with six semicircular arches, each spanning 20 meters, were constructed starting in March 1901. For cost reasons, a new construction technique was developed: the piers were built without external scaffolding. Instead, iron scaffolding was embedded in the three longest piers and adjusted in height as construction progressed. The three iron scaffolds were connected by crossbeams to which electric construction cranes could be mounted. These cranes lifted the necessary building materials to the appropriate pier height. A mixture of lime mortar and sand was used to bond the stones of the piers. The mortar came from a factory in Unterterzen on Lake Walen and was transported to the construction site of the Landwasser Viaduct on a 0.75-meter gauge construction railway laid along the future route. After only about a year and a half of construction, the Landwasser Viaduct was completed in October 1902. The structure has proven resilient ever since: the Landwasser Viaduct only required minor repairs in 2009. Today, the Landwasser Viaduct remains the symbol of the Rhaetian Railway and, as an imposing structure, invites passengers, tourists, and locals to take photographs. La Tuor square tower, Bergün/Bravuogn Tower from the 13th century in the old village center of Bergün (Bravuogn), probably the seat of a servant of the Greifenstein lordship. Three floors and the old high entrance of the original building are still preserved. In the early 17th century, the building was converted into a clock and bell tower and given a baroque dome roof. RhB Station, Bergün/Bravuogn Fascinatingly different travel since 1889 1904 Opening of the Thusis – St. Moritz line With our unique mountain routes, the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Glacier Express, and the Bernina Express, we have guaranteed fascinating rail experiences across Graubünden since 1889. Our world-famous railway is an integral part of one of Switzerland's most beautiful landscapes. What began in 1889 with the opening of the line from Landquart to Klosters is today a 385-kilometer-long network of routes in the heart of the Swiss Alps. Harmoniously integrated into the rugged natural surroundings, the railway lines and engineering structures contribute to the charm of Graubünden. In 1888, Graubünden railway pioneers realized their vision of a mountain railway. At the initiative of the Dutchman Willem-Jan Holsboer, they founded the Landquart-Davos Narrow Gauge Railway Company. Ground was broken in the same year, and the Landquart–Klosters railway line opened in 1889. The first steam trains ran from Landquart to Davos as early as 1890. Later, lines to St. Moritz, Disentis, and Scuol-Tarasp were added. Thanks to mergers with the Arosa and Bernina railways, the network expanded. Just a quarter of a century later, almost the entire Rhaetian Railway network was built. The 19,042-meter-long Vereina Tunnel was the last extension to be completed, opening in 1999. Over the years, the Rhaetian Railway has continued to develop, but has remained true to its mission: connecting the most beautiful places in the mountains with fascinating railway lines. 2月 18, 2025, Kurhaus Bergün
Kurhaus Bergün / Allegra and Bainvegni The Kurhaus Bergün was planned in connection with the new Albula railway line, which was put into operation in 1903. The well-known Zurich architect Jost Franz Huwyler-Boller was commissioned to build it and the grand hotel began operations in 1906. The aim was to make Bergün attractive for tourism as an acclimatization and climatic health resort. Despite luxurious and, for the time, state-of-the-art facilities, the economic upturn failed to materialize and so the Kurhaus fought for its existence from the start. In 1949 the house had to be closed after a fire in the attic and its continued existence was uncertain. From 1952 onwards the Swiss Association for Family Hostels successfully operated the Kurhaus. The hotel rooms were combined into simple holiday apartments and rented out by the week. However, no major work was carried out to maintain the house over the next 50 years. This proved to be a stroke of luck during the later restoration: little of the original substance of the spa house was destroyed. In 2002, the dilapidated house was closed for the time being. Long-time regulars founded the new Kurhaus Bergün AG and thus saved it from ruin. Since then, the building has been restored in small steps in an exemplary manner and with great skill in line with the principles of monument preservation, dusted off and made fit for the new century as a valuable Art Nouveau gem. The work paid off: With the award as “Historic Hotel of the Year 2012”, the spa house has experienced a pleasing upswing and boost in popularity and can look to its future with optimism. 2月 18, 2025, Reformed Church of Bergün / Bravuogn
Reformed Church Bergün/Bravuogn from 1188 The Reformed Church in Bergün/Bravuogn is an evangelical-reformed church under cantonal monument protection. The building is located at the southeastern exit of the village towards the Albula Pass. Description The church was built in 1188. In pre-Reformation times, around 1500, the choir was renovated, the nave was redesigned and the Romanesque church tower was given a new helmet over the spires. The interior of the Bergün church has a richly decorated wooden ceiling that runs through the entire nave. The famous late Gothic fresco cycle is an Italian wall painting from the early Renaissance period, including motifs from the Passion of Jesus Christ. The pulpit, which has a sounding board, and the gallery, which is only accessible from the outside, date from the first half of the 18th century. The organ is more recent and was installed in 1979. The gallery is open during the day. The church can be visited via the gallery.
