Great views of this ‘crease’ in the hill. Lots of wildlife on view here, with its natural steep sides, birds of prey are often circling and hoovering. Grazing livestock are also common here.

Really lovely second part to the walk. The climb up is straightforward but quite taxing and steep in places. Difficult if you have knee problems etc

Buriton is a really attractive and historic place with a nice friendly and active community. Walkers, cyclists and horse-riders are welcomed here but do remember that car parking is very limited, except for customers of the Five Bells or Village Inn.

This beautiful Norman Church of St. Mary’s that we see today was built between 1150 and 1200, but was preceded by a smaller one that is listed in Domesday Book of 1086. Whether or not it was a Saxon building is not certainly known but the manor of Mapledurham, of which Buriton was the centre, was Saxon.

With over 2,000 acres of open-access woodland and downland to explore, Queen Elizabeth Country Park is a great place to start. From here, you have access to Butser Hill, the highest point on the South Downs, the visitor centre with its shop and cafe, and plenty of parking.

The village of Buriton enjoys an idyllic setting at the foot of the downs, complete with a duck pond. Next to the pond is the Church of Saint Mary, a beautiful building dating back to the 12th Century. <https://southdownsdiscovery.com/destination-guides/buriton/>

The Queen Elizabeth Country Park facilities are really handy for South Downs Way walkers. We arrived too early in the day for the café but the toilets were open and it was nice to have breakfast on the benches in the sheltered courtyard. There's a fresh water tap outside too.
