You will gain about 562 feet (171 metres) in elevation over approximately 2 hours and 1 minutes of walking. The trail offers sweeping views of the iconic Seven Sisters chalk cliffs and the English Channel, with glimpses of the historic Belle Tout Lighthouse.
To start your hike, head to Birling Gap, which serves as a convenient hub with a cafe, toilets, and a visitor center. This location also provides direct access to the beach and excellent vantage points for viewing the Seven Sisters cliffs. Remember that some sections involve walking along the South Downs Way, a prominent long-distance footpath.
This area is rich in history and natural beauty. You can spot the Belle Tout Lighthouse, now a private residence, and the distant Beachy Head Lighthouse. The coastal stretch is an important wildlife habitat, where you might see birds like linnets and goldfinches. For a refreshment stop, The Tiger Inn in East Dean is a popular choice for walkers. Embark on a moderate 8.1-mile (13.1 km) hiking loop from Birling Gap to Beachy Head, offering dramatic coastal views and varied terrain. This route involves about 788 feet (240 metres) of elevation gain and typically takes around 3 hours and 39 minutes to complete. You will traverse undulating downland paths, mostly off-road grassy tracks and gravel trails, with several steep climbs and descents. The trail showcases the iconic white chalk cliffs of the Seven Sisters and culminates at Beachy Head, Britain's highest chalk sea cliff, where you can see France on a clear day. Expect open chalk grassland, home to diverse butterflies and wildflowers, alongside sections through fields and wooded areas near Friston.
While generally accessible, some paths can be uneven, and winter conditions may lead to muddy sections, so prepare accordingly. For refreshments along the way, you can find options like The Tiger Inn pub or Hikers Rest cafe in East Dean, or the Beachy Head pub. Always stay clear of the cliff edges due to erosion and rockfall risks, ensuring your safety throughout the journey.
This loop forms part of the renowned South Downs Way, incorporating historical landmarks such as the Belle Tout Lighthouse, now a private residence, and the distinctive red and white Beachy Head Lighthouse. You will also follow sections of the ancient "Went Way," historically used by shepherds and smugglers. The area around Birling Gap is recognized as a marine nature reserve, adding to the natural significance of this memorable hiking experience within the South Downs National Park.

Impressive cliffs rising perpendicularly from the sea. The name "Seven Sisters" is said to have been used by sailors in the past.

From here, just off Beachy Head Road, you are either at the start or coming to the finish of the South Downs Way, depending on which direction you started from. Here you have views north across towards Eastbourne, whilst behind you are the famed cliffs of Beachy Head, and of course to the east, sublime views out over the English Channel.

This coastal landscape with its white cliffs is spectacular. Many people know that. Therefore, it is better to avoid visiting on weekends.

Above the visitor center you have a beautiful view of the chalk cliffs.

Great views of the lighthouse below. However, the cliff edge is completely unsecured and you should have a certain respect for heights. As a father of three children with unfortunately only two arms, you can start to sweat a bit. But there is an ice cream van in the car park: the only place in England where we had to pay with cash.

In Exceat, in addition to the visitor centre, there is a café, a (paid) car park and the bus stop to Brighton and Eastbourne. The buses run frequently and are very cheap, so they are a good way to explore the delta and the Seven Sisters.

A (locked) sheep barn, the animals that go with it, flowering broom, bent trees and a strong wind. There's nothing more here - we thought it was perfect 😁

Sculpted by melt-water and heavy rain during recent ice ages, and the erosive power of the sea more recently, the present-day cliffs mark the end of a series of natural inland gulleys. The Seven Sisters Cliffs are primary composed of chalk , a soft fine-grained, and porous limestone rock formed from accumulation of calcium carbonate-rich remains of marine organism. Birling Gap is a coastal popular hub the the South Downs meet the sea.
