The headwaters of the Wethau are located in the Thuringian Saale-Holzland district west of the town of Eisenberg. It has its source in Hohendorf near Bürgel and flows together above Petersberg with a tributary that has its source south of Hainspitz. From there it flows northwards via Kämmeritz, Hainchen and Zschorgula, crosses the state border with Saxony-Anhalt and flows through the towns of Seiselitz, Utenbach, Cauerwitz, Großgestewitz, Wettaburg, Wetterscheid, Mertendorf and Wethau.
