The harbor in Ypres, known locally as "De Kaaie," is actually the Ieperlee, which runs beneath the city of Ypres and becomes visible again there. At the Drie Grachten (Three Canals), the Ieperlee is joined by the Martjevaart canal, which originates in Merkem. Drie Grachten is a hamlet in the west of Merkem where the three canals converge: the Martjevaart canal, the Ypres-IJzer canal (also known as the Ieperlee Canal), and the Ieperlee itself. Drie Grachten is also known for the battles during World War I, in which the French, including the Zouaves, fought against the Germans. After a failed attack on the German outpost at Luigem, the Germans captured a number of Zouaves. They launched a counterattack but hid behind the captured Zouaves to prevent the French Zouaves from firing on them, thinking they were their own men returning. At one point, one of the captured Zouaves reportedly shouted: "Tirez donc au nom de Dieu, ce sont les Boches!" (For God's sake, these are the Boches!). Immediately after the warning, a French salvo erupted, mowing down both the Germans and the captured Zouaves. The Zouaves of Northern France (Union des Zouaves du Nord) continued to commemorate this after the war. Luigem is a hamlet 1 kilometer east of Drie Grachten and 1 kilometer west of the center of Noordschote. The Zouaves (French: zouaves) were a light infantry unit of the French Army, associated with French North Africa.

Like the Yser, the Ieperlee served as a natural defensive line and was strategically important to both the Allies and German troops during WWI. The Belgians withdrew behind the Yser and the Ypres-Yser Canal after the fall of Antwerp in October 1914. During the war, the canal was often used to transport troops and ammunition, and it formed an important barrier against enemy attacks. The canal’s proximity to the front line meant that the area was constantly under fire and fierce fighting took place. The Allies managed to recapture Merkem, situated on the canal, during the war, although this territorial gain was largely abandoned during the German spring offensive of 1918.

The Frontzate cycle path is approximately 13 kilometres long and offers a car-free and safe environment for cyclists. It is a recreational path that runs over the former railway bed of line 74, which connected Diksmuide to Nieuwpoort. This cycle path has a rich historical significance, as it played a strategic role during the First World War as part of the Belgian defence line.

The Knokkebrug is a bridge over the Yser in the Belgian province of West Flanders. The drawbridge is located at the mouth of the Ieperleekanaal in the Yser, on the border of Reninge (part of the municipality of Lo-Reninge), Merkem (part of the municipality of Houthulst) and Nieuwkapelle (part of the municipality of Diksmuide). At the end of the 16th century, the Spanish built a fort on this site, Fort Knokke or "Fort de Knocke". This fortress was intended to protect the Yser plain from attacks by reformers from Ostend. In the following centuries, the fort was adapted and expanded by the French and the Austrians. It was demolished again under Emperor Joseph II. The Knokkebrug is named after this fort and is located on the northern edge of the former fort.
