The Ypres Canal runs 14 kilometers from Ypres to the Knokke Bridge, where the canal joins the Yser. Even if the canal looks as if it has been drawn with a ruler: on the left and right of the bank you will find a landscape that cannot be pressed into any geometric shapes.

Old towpaths lead you along almost at the level of the water, here you can encounter a remarkable fauna and flora.

Like the Yser, the Ieperlee served as a natural defensive line and was strategically important to both the Allies and German troops during WWI. The Belgians withdrew behind the Yser and the Ypres-Yser Canal after the fall of Antwerp in October 1914.

During the war, the canal was often used to transport troops and ammunition, and it formed an important barrier against enemy attacks. The canal’s proximity to the front line meant that the area was constantly under fire and fierce fighting took place. The Allies managed to recapture Merkem, situated on the canal, during the war, although this territorial gain was largely abandoned during the German spring offensive of 1918.
