The Zwarte Beek is a typical lowland stream in Limburg. It originates in Hechtel and Helchteren and flows via Koersel, Beringen, Paal, Meldert, and Zelem to the Demer River in Diest, Flemish Brabant. Its source is located on the western flank of the Kempen Plateau and seamlessly connects with other important nature reserves such as the Dommeldal (Bollisserbeek). Over a distance of 5.5 km, the Zwarte Beek then flows through and along the Leopoldsburg Military Domain. From Paal, the valley widens and is flanked by the first hillocks.
