The pleasant path runs between Bois Dreût Thier and Thier Moulu. "Thier" translates as "hill" or "small hill." The path does indeed have some relief, with beautiful views of the wider area at both slightly higher ends. The lower section, lined with trees and shrubs, also offers lovely views.

The current castle complex is largely 16th-century, but was built around a square keep from the 14th century. The keep's location was obviously strategic: slightly elevated above the surrounding area, it offers excellent views. The original military architecture gave way in the 16th century to a balanced combination of defense and residential comfort. Besides the main building, the estate also includes a farmhouse, a barn, and various outbuildings, which together form a coherent whole. All these structures are constructed from locally quarried limestone rubble, while carefully cut limestone was used for the lintels, sills, doorframes, and window frames. This choice of materials testifies to the craftsmanship and prosperity of the owners at that time. The oldest known lord associated with Famelette is Thiry Lardinois de Famelette, Lord of Moha, which highlights the close ties between the estate and local feudal power structures. In 1441, the castle passed into the hands of Collar de Hosden, who held the office of bailiff of Moha. His role as representative of the seigneurial authority underscores Famelette's administrative importance within the region. A decisive phase in the castle's history began in 1558, when it was acquired by the Berlaymont de Floyon family, an influential noble dynasty in the Southern Netherlands. Under their rule, the estate underwent two thorough renovations, during which the existing medieval structures were expanded and embellished. The Berlaymont de Floyon family remained the owners of the castle until the early 19th century, a period marked by significant political and social changes, including the consequences of the French Revolution. Afterward, Famelette came into the hands of the noble Aspremont Lynden family, who sold the estate in 1878 to the Collinet family (owners of Carmeuse, the quarries). Source: www.burchten-kastelen.be

A peaceful and beautiful spot, indeed, but it is strange how it sits in the shadow of and contrasts with the gigantic buildings of La Carmeuse, the company that operates the nearby quarries.

Excavations are conducted year-round at Moha Castle, making it unique in Belgium. When I visited, two archaeologists were uncovering a wall that runs beneath the visible castle and likely dates back to the 12th century.

The castle is free to visit. At the foot of the rock, there's a visitor center where you can pick up a badge to open the gate. For €4, you can also get a brochure with information about the most important points. The castle is only open to visitors starting in April, but the friendly man at the visitor center let me in on February 27th... as far as you can even call it "inside" at this ruin ;-)

In Fumal, two historic buildings stand out: Fumal Castle and Saint-Remy Church. Fumal Castle is a medieval fortified manor house, with later extensions, which was once the power base of local lords and still dominates the village skyline. Saint-Remy Church is a Gothic-Renaissance church, with elements from various periods, and has been the religious center of the village for centuries. Together, they are important witnesses to Fumal's history and heritage.

The war memorial at the church in Oteppe commemorates one military victim and the veterans of the First World War (11 names on the right side). First World War: Delfosse Joseph, Keiem, October 19, 1914. He is also mentioned on the war memorial in Lamontzée. The text on the memorial reads: "To our heroes, death for the fatherland." Two memorial plaques are mounted on the plinth. The first memorial commemorates Plumier Elie, who died as a prisoner of war in Neubrandenburg (Germany) on June 28, 1943. A second memorial plaque commemorates the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camps (1945–1995). Source: tracesofwar.nl

The history of the church of Oteppe dates back to the 14th century (perhaps even the 13th). The patronage of the church of Oteppe had been held by Orval Abbey in Villers-devant-Orval since 1304. In 1700, the tower and nave of the church were rebuilt. A new choir was also built in 1774, but it was rebuilt again half a century later, in 1832-1833, along with the entire nave. The tower was rebuilt in 1887, but it turned out that the nave vaults could not support the weight of the new tower. This resulted in a more complex and extensive renovation than initially planned. The church furnishings date from the 18th or 19th century. The 18th-century main altar originally stood in the Saint-Quirinus Priory in Huy. Source: Wikipedia
