Beautiful narrow path between the forest and Les Gottes

A 17th-century castle originally belonging to the Abbey of Neufmoustier (Huy). It fell into disrepair and was rebuilt in 1889 in the Flemish Renaissance style. Several owners followed, the last of whom let it fall into disrepair. It has now been vacant for years, squatted, and completely destroyed. Everything needs renovation.

A beautiful valley through the deciduous forest of the Maurissartbeek, one of the streams that originates in the Tihange Forest and flows to the Meuse. Shortly before the Meuse, it passes through the charming hamlet of Neuville s'Huy.

There was already a farm at this location in the 7th century. It was here that Jean de Hermalle, known as Jean de Tihange, son of local farmers and a farmer himself, settled before being elected successor to the 24th Bishop of Tongeren-Maastricht, under the name St. Jean l'Agneau. In the 15th century, there was still a farm there. In the 17th century, it became a country house. In 1983, Tibetan Buddhist monks purchased the property.

Wooden bridge to cross over the river

Modave Castle was the first to use a pumping system that was revolutionary for its time. Every prestigious castle had its ponds and fountains, but many were situated on high ground and didn't always have springs nearby. Modave Castle, for example, was built on a rock 50 meters above the Hoyoux River. Renquin Sualem, a carpenter from Jemeppe-sur-Meuse, devised an ingenious system using water wheels on the Hoyoux River to pump water 50 meters up to the castle. It was so remarkable that Baron Arnold de Ville, a friend of the De Marchin family, brought the inventor with him to Versailles to pump Seine water up to the castle gardens. In 1684, the work was completed, and the famous "Machine de Marly" was a reality. It was one of the engineering marvels of its time. However, it was Arnold de Ville who took all the credit. Renquin Sualem didn't get what he deserved. The 'machine' would run for another 133 years before being replaced by steam engines.
