La Guanella is an architectural complex with a 14th century watchtower. In a border area between Bologna, Modena and Pistoia, the Hospital of San Biagio was built here to control the Via Cassiola and welcome travellers. In 1944, at Monte Castello, on the Gothic Line, the German army defeated the Brazilian infantry who suffered serious losses. The fallen are remembered today with the majestic monument completed in 2001 by Mary Vieira.
