In 1278, the brothers Johannes and Lambertus founded the Cistercian monastery in Schale and endowed it with several possessions. The foundation was confirmed by a charter from the Osnabrück bishop Konrad II of Rietberg dated October 21, 1278. The convent originated from the Börstel monastery. The name Halverde is composed of the syllables hal (moor, swamp) and verde (vorde = ford), meaning "moor ford." The Halverde Moor is a remnant wetland of this former moor. The first documented reference dates back to 1150, when a farm in Halverde (Halfart) was donated by Count Henry I of Tecklenburg to the Bishop of Osnabrück. An entry in the Corvey Revenue Register from the 12th century is the first documented evidence of the town of Halverde. This is a deed of land gift from the noble Wigbold of Horstmar to Bishop Arnold of Osnabrück, which can be dated to 1189.
