In Steinbild you cross the bridge from one bank to the other.

For all railway enthusiasts: In Lathen (Emsland), an old steam locomotive has stood as a memorial since 1977, commemorating the long-gone narrow-gauge railway between Lathen and Werlte. The locomotive is nicknamed "Pingel Anton." Although it didn't run on this line, its design resembles the engines that once steamed along here. The memorial locomotive originally came from Donawitz, a town on the Hungarian-Austrian border.

In addition to the church, Steinbild offers a charming holiday home area, a campsite, and a marina. Perfect for a relaxing stay in this picturesque setting! Idyllically situated on the Ems River, the church was first documented on December 7, 1304. A highlight of the church is the old sandstone Madonna, also known as the "Madonna of the Seafarers." She was once the patron saint of boatmen and fishermen on the Ems River and is now located inside the church. Originally, the Virgin Mary stood in a niche on the outer wall so that passing boatmen could greet her.

St. George's Church in Steinbild! Many passing visitors like to stop and admire the uniquely beautiful location on the Ems River. The church's impressive tower and the date 1512, which indicates the addition of the Gothic long building, are eye-catching. The parish, which was extensive at the time, stretched from Aschendorf to Dersum, Walchum, Sustrum, and even parts of Wippingen and Renkenberge. It's easy to imagine the long distances people traveled back then, often on foot, to attend services – far from paved roads. The church was and remains a central place in people's lives and a place where faith plays a significant role. Numerous church services and holiday celebrations took place here, and many sermons were delivered.
