5月 19, 2025, Tombe Morte (e 13 ponti)
The hydraulic junction of the Tombe Morte-Tredici Ponti constitutes the most important concentration of artificial waterways in the province of Cremona, irrigating approximately 85,000 hectares of countryside. Here the Naviglio Civico di Cremona, the Naviglio Grande Pallavicino and the Canale Vacchelli intersect, the latter pouring almost all of its flow into the Naviglio Pallavicino, the Naviglio Civico and a dozen irrigation ditches through an impressive system of locks. Finally, a spillway, built between 1968 and 1981, detaches from the junction, which discharges any excess flow from the Naviglio Civico, the Naviglio Pallavicino and the Vacchelli into the Oglio river. Two different hypotheses have been made regarding the origin of the name, the first would originate from the term tomba which is synonymous with siphon, a hydraulic element that connects two conduits. Probably some of these artifacts would have fallen into disuse, hence the adjective death. Another hypothesis is linked to the discovery of several dozen burials dating back to the late Roman era.

I report, for information purposes, what little I read to contextualize my visit and try to explain such a concentration of water and water exchanges. (from Wikipedia) "[...] The Dead Tombs (also known as Le Formose) are an important hydraulic node located in the municipal area of Genivolta, in the central-northern sector of the province of Cremona. In a space of a few hundred square meters, three waterways of a certain importance intersect (Naviglio Civico di Cremona, Naviglio Grande Pallavicino and Canale Vacchelli). While the two canals do not exchange their waters except to a minimal extent, the Vacchelli Canal pours almost all of its flow into the Naviglio Pallavicino, the Naviglio Civico and a dozen smaller canals, via a notable system of locks. Finally, a drainage vessel, built between 1968 and 1981, detaches from the node, which discharges any excess flow of the Naviglio Civico, the Naviglio Pallavicino and the Vacchelli into Oglio. The reason why so many important watercourses meet precisely in this place is to be found in the morphological characteristics of this strip of the Po Valley. The Crema area is crossed by a relict river valley, called the Morbasco valley or Navigli valley. This valley has its head in the strip of territory between Romanengo and Soncino and can be precisely identified up to a few kilometers south of Soresina. This depression, whose bottom is located about ten meters lower than the fundamental level of the plain, was in ancient times the natural location of a still existing watercourse, the Morbasco, and currently hosts the riverbeds of the Naviglio Civico di Cremona and the Naviglio Grande Pallavicino. At the Dead Tombs there is a narrowing of this valley, which forces the waterways to come closer and then meet, and then separate again as the furrow widens again [...]"

Important hydraulic junction and meeting point between various dirt paths that allow you to discover the area by bike. You cannot get here by motorized means. This area is full of fun dirt roads, to be discovered slowly! Following the Vacchelli and then the Naviglio Cremonese, you can easily get to Cremona!

It is difficult not to stop in this peaceful corner. Shade and cool at will in summer thanks to the continuous movement of the waters that pass under the thirteen bridges.

Large water engineering plant, the Cremonese countryside has been irrigated for centuries thanks to the canals that intersect (in the true sense of the word) at this point, one is amazed by the various directions of the water

In the territory of the Municipality of Soresina, reachable along the Walled Cities cycle path or from a cart track that branches off from the Genivolta Soresina provincial road (500 m). Place of "Marian" worship which is referred to for an alleged "miracle", linked to the purchase of the word of a daughter of the Marquis Battista Barbò, feudal lord of Soresina. In honor of this he had this sanctuary built in 1664. https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santuario_della_Beata_Vergine_di_Ariadello

It is located about 2.5 km north of the town in the middle of the countryside. It was built by the feudal lord G.B. Barbò with the contribution of the population in memory of a miracle. The little daughter of Barbò, deaf and dumb, regained speech while offering wild flowers to the image of the Madonna painted on a wall which is part of a building called "Tor de Ariadini". The effigy is highly revered by the Soresinesi

Nice ride starting from Cremona. In particular, the initial and final part where you cycle in the green, the central part is a bit open without green and asphalt cycle path. Once in genivolta you can appreciate the branching off of canals. In the initial part you can meet turtle families.

Mirabello Ciria is a small fraction of the municipality of Casalmorano, along the cycle path of the civic canal of Cremona. Noteworthy is the center of the hamlet, the Sonzogni palace at the end of 1700 and the hydroelectric power station along the Naviglio Civico. The latter, together with that of Rezza (Genivolta), was built in the early 1900s to supply electricity to the villages in the area. Dismissed immediately after the war.

Genivolta's very suggestive hydraulic gear is the so-called Dead Tombs - Thirteen Bridges. The general picture is fascinating: a tangle of canals, sluices, gullies, joints, manholes, bridges, siphons, dispensers, unloaders, binders, synthesized dividers in the space of 200 steps. This is the most important hydraulic junction as the concentration of artificial watercourses in the province of Cremona suitable for irrigating the fields. Here the civic canals of Cremona and Grande Pallavicino meet, taken from the Oglio, the irrigation ditches originating from the fountains placed along the border line between the present provinces of Cremona and Bergamo and the Vacchelli canal, which carries the waters of the Adda.L the name of Death Tombs derives, in all probability, from the presence on this site of one or more artifacts (tombs, manholes) that have fallen into disuse. During the 12th century, a large quantity of water from fountains opened in the Cremona area was conveyed to the Old Canal in the direction of Cremona. The canal, to which was later added water extracted from the Oglio a Calcio, was adapted to navigation in the 14th century, becoming the current civic canal of Cremona. The Grande Pallavicino canal is the main channel of the irrigation network of the Pallavicino condominium, consisting of a series of waterways of different origins and united in a single property by Galeazzo I Pallavicino in the 16th century. Fed by Oglio between Calcio and Pumenengo, it subsequently received the contribution of various open fountains along the strip now identified as Basso Bergamasco (passage from the upper to the lower Lombard plain). At the Dead Tombs the Vacchelli canal, built immediately after the Unification of Italy, dispenses its waters to the civic and Grande Pallavicino canals, as well as to a bundle of irrigation ditches next to them, thus transforming the Adda into the most generous source of water supply. for the Cremona area. A spillway channel, known as the Genivolta Scolmatore, pours into the Oglio in the event of floods the greatest flows.
