The archaeological museum is located in an extraordinary architectural context, the former convent of the Monastero Maggiore di San Maurizio, founded in the 8th century AD, where the history of ancient Milan still shows visible traces. The area was occupied by a 1st-century AD residential building, the walls, and the large Roman circus adjacent to the late 3rd-century AD imperial palace, of which significant remains have survived.

The image shows the public sculpture "Ago, Filo e Nodo" (Needle, Thread, and Knot), located in Piazzale Cadorna in Milan. The work was created by artists Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen and inaugurated in 2000. The sculpture is divided into two parts: a giant needle with a multicolored thread and, nearby, a final knot emerging from the ground. The colors of the thread (red, green, and yellow) symbolize the lines of the Milanese subway, and at the same time, the work pays homage to Milan as the fashion capital. The sculpture was commissioned as part of the urban renewal of Piazzale Cadorna, designed by architect Gae Aulenti.
