この礼拝堂の起源は、ある伝説によると、一人の猟師に遡ると言われています。その猟師は、当時ここに立っていた国境のモミの木「モアリ・タン」に高い場所を持っていました。ある日、彼がそこから落ちたとき、銃が暴発しましたが、猟師は怪我をしませんでした。感謝の気持ちから、彼はその後、モミの木に奉納額を取り付けました。その後、その木は巡礼地となり、多くの巡礼者が松葉杖や献金箱を木に吊るしたそうです。 1899年、「シュナイター地区」の農民たちは、国境のモミの木が立っていた場所に、現在のヴァルトカペレ・マリア・タンを建設しました。古いモミの木の運命は不明です。

In the north-east of Traunstein, extensive moors were able to form on a moraine with little water permeability. Today, however, they have almost disappeared due to forestry and woodland management. In some places, however, intact raised and fen areas with their rare and unique vegetation can still be found. During heavy rainfall, the moors can store huge amounts of water and thus reduce the risk of flooding for those living along rivers and streams.
