⛪ Frauenwörth Monastery, also known as Frauenchiemsee Abbey, is a Benedictine monastery on the picturesque Fraueninsel island in Lake Chiemsee – and one of the oldest nunneries in Germany2. 📜 History & Foundation The monastery was founded in 782 by Duke Tassilo III and his wife Liutberga of Bavaria. The first known abbess was Saint Irmengard (832–866), who is now venerated as the patron saint of the Chiemgau region. After secularization in 1803, the monastery was dissolved, but the nuns were allowed to remain. It was rebuilt in 1836 by King Ludwig I. 🌿 Life & Spirituality The Benedictine nuns live according to the rule of Saint Benedict: Ora et labora – pray and work. Today, the monastery has approximately 20 sisters who, together with staff, run the monastery, the monastery shop, and the herb garden. 🎓 Education & Seminars Frauenwörth is a center for adult education with around 500–600 seminars per year.
