The remaining raised bog in front of the North Sea coastal dike near Sehestedt is unique in the world. Only when extreme storm or hurricane tides in Sehestedt reach more than 1.70 meters above mean high tide does the more than 3-meter-thick "moor island" begin to float, hence the term "floating bog."

Not just one bench—there are plenty of them here. In the evening, it's also a great place to enjoy the sunset over the water.

The moment you cross the dike, you have a wide view over the salt marshes and the Wadden Sea all the way to Wilhelmshafen.

In the process, pieces break off, become deposited on the dike or in the salt marshes, or are washed away and ground down by subsequent floods. Thus, the moor gradually shrinks. One of its special features is that two completely different ecosystems border each other here: the freshwater ecosystem of the moor and the saltwater system of the salt marshes and mudflats. The moor is accessible via a 150-meter-long boardwalk in the southern part, but otherwise, due to its uniqueness and sensitivity, it is not accessible in order to preserve it for as long as possible.
