This church is a wonderful example of Lombard Romanesque. It was first mentioned at the beginning of the 12th century.

Originally it was known as Pecetum Valentinum as it was located near the current Valenza, then an important garrison to guard the crossings on the Po. It was built around a large villa, the typical patrician economic structure of the late Republican period and the first Roman Empire, a combination of country house, farm and factory. On clear days, from this small viewpoint overlooking the Tanaro, it is possible to distinguish the whole Piedmontese and Ligurian Apennine arc very well. Towards the end of the summer, it is also possible to have a nice feast of tasty figs by detaching them directly from the branches of the trees. It deserves a stop.
