The old iron bridge of the district railway is a typical iron bridge of its time, but today it is in a state of severe disrepair. The district railway ran here until 1974 – today only the most daring venture across.

Situated on a glacial "holm", the Lehmsieker Forest is one of the last remaining beech forests in the otherwise forest-poor region. It is part of the NATURA 2000 protected area "Forests of the Ostenfelder Geest". This includes twelve forest areas between Schwabstedt in the south and Osterohrstedt in the north. The natural forests are characterized by a high level of species and structural diversity.

Schwabstedt was a bishop's seat from around 1268 to 1700 and the Treene was an important waterborne trade route at that time. Theodor Storm dedicated two novellas to the town, namely "Renate" and "Zur Wald- und Wasserfreude".

The Schwabstedt church was built around 1160. It was originally a Romanesque fieldstone building, which lost much of its simple beauty through renovations. The church has had a ridge turret (tower) since 1889, and a large church clock was installed as early as 1644, which is now in the museum.
