The church was probably built in the 12th century. Originally, it housed a particularly valuable piece, an alabaster altarpiece from around 1430. This altarpiece is now located at Gottorf Castle in Schleswig. The current carved altarpiece is the most important work of art in the church. It was created in 1510 but only arrived in Schwabstedt in 1834.
