Like many old towns in Italy, Colle di Val d'Elsa has a lower town on the plain along the Elsa River and an upper town on the hill, surrounded by a 16th-century wall. A monumental fortified gate provides access to the old city. Glass has been produced in Colle di Val d'Elsa since the Middle Ages and today 95% of Italy's crystal comes from here.

6月 30, 2024, Porta San Matteo
Porta San Matteo is a historic gate in San Gimignano. The gate, built in 1262, is named after Via San Matteo, the main road that passes through the gate. This road was the part of the Francigena that ran through the city from north to south. Along Via di San Matteo there are remarkable buildings such as the Pesciolini House-Tower, a clipped tower from the thirteenth century; the beautiful Chiesa di San Bartolo; the Cancelleria Palazzo. After passing through the gate, a fascinating tour of houses, palaces and medieval towers awaits. The gate was built in the Sienese style and offers a fascinating view of the city as it would have looked in the Middle Ages.

6月 30, 2024, San Gimignano Historic Center
In the Elsa Valley, the fifteen feudal towers of San Gimignano beckon to the sky as if to a loved one. From the Porta San Giovanni to the Piazza della Cisterna, walkers wonder if they have been taken back to the Middle Ages in a time machine. Imagine the great stone structures, where there once stood 72, adorned with banners of three fabrics, painted with saffron as they could only do here! San Gemignano, a bit of a victim of its own success, is always teeming with tourists, but the magic remains nevertheless.

6月 30, 2024, View of Val d'Era
The landscape of Valdera (Val d'Era) is characterized by rolling hills interspersed with small watercourses, the result of intensive agricultural activities that have continued uninterruptedly since ancient times. The area retains much of its agricultural origins, with carefully cultivated fields, orchards in the plains and hills covered with olive groves, vineyards and farms.

6月 30, 2024, Chiesa dei Santi Jacopo e Stefano
The modern facade is vaguely Gothic, as is the interior, with a single nave and a trussed roof, equipped with charming stained glass windows from the twentieth century. On the inside of the facade are the two most important works of the church, coming from the ancient prepositura of San Jacopo: on the left as you enter is the painting with the Virgin and Child enthroned between the saints Giovanni, Francesco, Matteo and Jacopo, attributed to Pier Francesco Fiorentino, and on the other side of the entrance the Madonna between Saints Giovanni Battista and Girolamo by Biagio di Antonio. Four paintings from different periods, from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century, are placed on the walls of the nave1. Among them is the interesting San Sebastiano between San Rocco and another saint of the little known Baccio Gorini, from the second half of the sixteenth century. Behind the altar is the reconstruction of a tabernacle with a fifteenth-century fresco depicting the Assumption of the Virgin, angels and saints making music on the sides and the Four Evangelists on the vault.

The Chiesa di Cristo Re in Gambassi Terme, also known as the Church of Saints Jacopo and Stefano, is a charming church built in 1940 with a Gothic facade and interior. It houses valuable works of art from different periods, including paintings by Pier Francesco Fiorentino and Biagio di Antonio. It is also home to a reconstructed tabernacle with a fifteenth-century fresco depicting the Assumption of the Virgin. This church is located in the heart of Valdelsa.

6月 30, 2024, Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta a Chianni
Santa Maria in Chianni is an important historical site located along the Via Francigena, an ancient pilgrimage route that runs from Canterbury in England to Rome. The Pieve di Santa Maria in Chianni is one of the most important examples of late Romanesque architecture in Tuscany. It is located a short distance from the historic center of Gambassi Terme. Despite the centuries and the restoration works that have taken place over time, the church still maintains an appearance similar to the facade of the Cathedral of Volterra. The church is remembered by Sigeric, the Archbishop of Canterbury, at the end of the 10th century, as the twentieth section of his long journey along the Via Francigena. The facade of the church, made of yellow sandstone, contrasts with the surrounding landscape.

The cathedral dates from the 12th century, but its bell tower with machicolations, a defensive tower of the old castle, is older. The cathedral was renovated in the 15th century and has a Pisan-Romanesque facade with some ceramic bowls (13th century); the three portals are 15th century.
