4月 19, 2025, Croce di Sarno Viewpoint

A pedestal, seemingly oversized compared to the size of the actual cross, forms the base for this small sacred monument. The stone base is divided horizontally into several levels, the third of which tapers towards the top. Above it stands the cross, whose crossbeam—in contrast to the longitudinal beam—is provided with a series of holes, the bottom of which, however, is not visible to the observer.

We will then cross fantastic scenery across the entire Piana Campana and reach the panoramic terrace where the most beautiful “rope” lava formation of Vesuvius is located, engraved by a deep fracture in which numerous species of fern live and inside which it is possible to enter as if we were in the bowels of the Earth! The path then continues along the Cognoli di Lavante of Monte Somma: a beautiful panoramic climb on one of the most scenic routes of the entire Park!

The very panoramic itinerary allows you to enjoy the most suggestive and wild scenery of Somma-Vesuvius, crossing forest environments, scrubland up to bare lava rock. The starting point is located along the road that from the Medici Palace of Ottaviano continues towards the volcanic complex. A barrier prohibiting vehicular traffic marks the beginning of the route, the first stretch of the path, common with path no. 1, winds along asphalted hairpin bends, and then turns into a dirt path. The plant landscape consists initially of a thick pine forest of stone pine and then in a mesophilous forest, with essences such as chestnut, Neapolitan alder, Neapolitan maple, holm oak, black locust. Among the nesting birds, the minute lesser spotted woodpecker, rare and localized in Campania, has only recently colonized the Vesuvius Park. After more than 1 km of walking on a steep climb you reach Largo Angelo Prisco dedicated to the young financier murdered by poachers in 1995 which represents the closest destination. From the Largo, path no. 1 branches off to the left, while the itinerary continues on the right on a slight climb, entering, between twists and turns, into a shady chestnut grove where the numerous species of mushrooms present give off an intense and pleasant fragrance.

The Palazzo Mediceo is a historic structure built in the Lombard era before the year 1000 in Ottaviano, a municipality in the province of Naples, and later belonged to a branch of the Florentine Medici family. In the second half of the 20th century it ended up in the hands of the Camorra, and was then returned to the city of Ottaviano in 1995. From the garden you can enjoy a beautiful view of the nearby Parish of San Michele Arcangelo. From November to April it is open from Thursday to Sunday from 10 am to 1 pm and from 2 pm to 5 pm. From May to October it is open from Monday to Friday from 10 am to 1 pm and from 4 pm to 8 pm. On Saturday and Sunday instead from 11 am to 2 pm and from 4 pm to 8 pm. During this period it hosts beautiful Christmas markets in the evening, with shows and various related initiatives.

With the tower on the corner, the building looks respectful, but from up close it is clearly showing its age. Nevertheless, it is impressive.

This building really stands out from the mass of houses in the village because of its battlements. I couldn't figure out why they were built, but I just thought the building was special. Perhaps someone can add to this.

A beautiful, high-lying castle with a charming park all around. The administration of the Vesuvio National Park is located in the gatehouse at the entrance.

The "Great Church" in this part of Ottaviano. The foundations of the building alone are really impressive. I appreciate the effort that went into its construction, but wouldn't the effort be better spent elsewhere?

The castle has an ancient and troubled history, about 1300 years long. In the 6th century the Longobards, coming from Benevento, settled in the area and less than a century later the castle was built, of which today only a few run-down ruins remain. As per practice in the Middle Ages, the first inhabited nucleus developed around the fortress, what is now known as Borgo San Matteo. In the following centuries the castle hosted King Manfredi of Swabia several times, who was buried there together with his son after having lost his life during the battle of Tagliacozzo. Later the castle passed into the hands of the Angevins and the County of Sarno ended up under the control of the Kingdom of Naples. In the 15th century, before passing to the Aragonese, the castle was occupied by the Orsini family, to whom we owe the building of the Bear Tower, still visible today. In these years the castle was the scene of the famous conspiracy of the barons and the Torre dell'Orso proved to be decisive for the fate of the battle of Sarno. The history of the Sarno fortress ends in the 17th century: in 1647 it was destroyed during the repressive actions against the revolts triggered by Masaniello. Also for this reason today the fortress is a set of almost unrecognizable ruins, which emerge scattered here and there in the mountain vegetation, where the central body of the castle is more intact and still viable, albeit with great attention and effort.

A substantial expansion on the east side of the castle probably dates back to the Aragonese period, i.e. the detached structure of the so-called Orsina tower because it was built by Daniele Orsini, count from 1460 to 1480. Located at a distance of about 100 meters outside the wall circuit, the structure covered a notable strategic importance in the defense of the castle on the north-east side. The tower, divided into four vaulted floors and connected by a staircase carved into the thickness of the wall, has a circular internal shape. The structure suffered considerable damage during the Second World War, following the earthquake of November 1980 and due to a strong wind it suffered another collapse in 1997.

The small sanctuary of the Madonna del Carmine al Castello stands on the Saretto hill overlooking the city of Sarno. It is very small but dear to the devotion of the Sarnese faithful. Due to its high position it is visible from all of the Agro Sarnese - Nocerino and arouses in those who observe it, even from a distance, the desire to visit it. It was originally dedicated to Saints Cosma and Damiano. It dates back to the period when the town was located on the hill. The news about this little church dates back to the Acts of the Holy Visit of the Bishop of Sarno, Paolo Fusco, of 1581: in them we read that the zealous Bishop, not being able to access the church due to a thick bush and lack of a path, he ascertained from the Tower of the Castle that the church was abandoned and declared it deconsecrated. A century after the visit of Bishop Fusco, around 1700, out of devotion to Francesco Antonio Corrado, the church rose again larger and more beautiful, thanks to his constant interest

Perhaps the first foundation of the church of San Martino dates back to the early Middle Ages or more likely to the Norman period as suggested by the dedication to the transalpine saint. It was already recorded in the fiscal sources of the fourteenth century and around the sixteenth century the bishops in some correspondence describe it already in a deplorable state. Following the washouts of volcanic materials that had deposited on the slope following the eruption of 1631, the church suffered considerable damage such as to be rebuilt between the end of that century and during the first years of the following century. The definitive abandonment and deterioration of the structure are unfortunately part of the sad history of the twentieth century.

The rock church of S. Lucia stands in the initial stretch of the homonymous valley, under the rocky overhang of Pian della Colla and on the side of via Bracigliano. This small and suggestive natural cave was erected as a Catholic church dedicated to S. Lucia almost certainly in the Norman-Byzantine period, in the first centuries after the year one thousand. The confirmation of its existence in the late Middle Ages comes from the payment of tithes in the years 1308-1310 by its rector Abbot Giovanni Bonamanto. This place was the refuge of many people during the war. The excursion is quite demanding and requires a considerable effort to go around the mountain and descend into the cave, an effort that is amply repaid by the beauty of the place and the spectacular view that can be enjoyed along the way. Pay particular attention to the part of the path that begins to descend towards the cave and even more if you approach to climb the site with the ruins.

The "cognoli" are the peaks of Monte Somma. Monte Somma is the ancient volcano from which Vesuvius originated.

A marvel of nature. As the lava flows, the surface lava begins to cool. Below, however, the lava continues to flow, twisting the denser overlying lava. Thus rope-like rocks are formed.
