Impressive and easy to reach sculpture

Drago Regeneration Vaia located above Magrè built on the ashes of the old dragon destroyed after an arson attack

Werk Verle | Forte Busa Verle is an Austro-Hungarian fort located at an altitude of 1506 meters in the Passo Vezzena – Malga Verle area. A bomb-proof fortified structure, it served to prevent a possible Italian advance from the Val d'Assa on the Vezzena, Cima le Mandrielle, Monte Erio. As a fort, Campo Luserna was subjected to heavy shelling by Italian artillery, but was never conquered.

The new Vaia Dragon (officially 'Drago Vaia Regeneration') is spectacular, imposing, and completely different from its predecessor: larger, more menacing, and above all more enraged by the human stupidity that destroys nature and art, a fact exemplified by the anonymous arson attack on the previous work. It has literally been reborn from the work that burned on the night of August 23, 2023: in addition to sharing the same position, 10-15% of the wood was recovered from the previous dragon. A symbol of rebirth and resilience. It has returned after less than a year as the largest wooden dragon in the world: 16 meters long x 7 meters high (double the size of the first), 6 tons of wood, more than 3,000 pieces on a steel frame. Unlike its predecessor, the dragon was not created on site, but inside a warehouse in Pedescala, then transported here in two enormous pieces and assembled. I quote the artist, Marco Martalar: "It took ten months of work to create, and the work carries with it the memory of what happened to its predecessor. Splendid cycle path in a fir forest. Too bad it's not possible to travel the entire route of the old one up to Cogollo del Cengio

With a mostly compact dirt surface, this pleasant cycle path was created from the railway line that once connected Rocchette to Asiago, and therefore the plain to the mountains. Along the route you can admire disused stations. The old steam train was nicknamed "vaca mora" by the people of the highlands and in one section it was equipped with a rack to overcome the large difference in height.
