🌉 Former Aartalbahn bridge near Michelbach – connection lost Here, a striking structure of the Aartalbahn once led over the Aar and today's B54 – directly into the Michelbach Tunnel. For decades, trains ran here on their way from Wiesbaden to Diez, past castles, spa towns, and deep forests. Today, the bridge is missing – demolished and disappeared from the landscape. Only trained eyes can still see where the track ran and how it spanned the tunnel. A loss for railway nostalgics and a silent reminder of how quickly history disappears if no one preserves it. 🛤️ Tip: The Michelbach Tunnel is still accessible from the Aartal Cycle Path – anyone interested in the old route should take the time to search for traces. After the narrow bridge, turn right onto the path and continue 100 meters up the slope. You're already at the tunnel entrance.

Built of stone, high above stands the castle that once belonged to the counts. Derelict, forgotten – but now reborn, Hohenstein is once again becoming a magnificent castle. Once a knight's palace, now a ruin – but what a wonderful viewing platform! If you don't stop here, it's your own fault – the castle has charm, history, and patience.

🏰 Hohenstein Castle – History, Views & Departure The ruins of Hohenstein Castle rise majestically above the Aar Valley – a place steeped in history and atmosphere. First mentioned in the 12th century, it served as a border fortress, court, and administrative seat of the Counts of Nassau for centuries. Later, it fell into ruin – but never forgotten. After decades of decay, a breath of fresh air is once again blowing through the old walls: The castle has been gradually renovated over the past few years and opened to the public. Cultural events, guided tours, and a planned reopening as a tourist destination are revitalizing the monument. 🚴‍♂️ Cyclists and hikers will find a short detour up there worthwhile – the view of the Aar Valley and the fortified silhouette are magnificent. If you want to experience history, this is the place for you. 📜 Tip: If you look closely, you'll discover traces of medieval architecture and inscriptions in the stones.
