Not an easy hike, but a very steep, almost vertical start.

The Rubicone River, made known by the passage of Julius Caesar in 49 BC, marked for a long period the administrative border between Republican Roman Italy and Cisalpine Gaul inhabited by the Gallic tribe. Currently, the historical memory of what the ancient Rubicone was has been lost, and it is also possible that in some places its course has changed. There are two rivers that mainly compete for this honor and both originate in the territory of Sogliano al Rubicone: the Fiumicino/Rubicone that rises from the eastern slopes of Mount Strigara and the Urgon that rises from the western slopes of Strigara (Loc. Bagnolo) and in the plain takes the name of Pisciatello. The Passo dei Meloni connects the Source of the Rubicone, in the locality of Strigara to that of the Urgone, in the locality of Bagnolo. The famous representation of the ideal proportions of the human body, demonstrates how it can be harmoniously inscribed in the two “perfect” figures of the circle and the square. Leonardo’s drawing was inspired by a passage by the architect Vitruvius (1st century BC). The iron sculpture, inspired by the drawing of the Vitruvian Man by Leonardo da Vinci, was installed on May 2, 2016 in the roundabout at the intersection of the SP11 and SP30 in Sogliano al Rubicone, Vignola – Curto district. Originally it was an oratory attached to the Church of Santa Maria di Vignola also used as a burial place. This recently renovated temple is dedicated to peace, as it stands on the site of a bloody battle of the Second World War, between the Germans and the English. San Donato Park is equipped with play equipment, picnic tables and benches, a drinking fountain and a scenic path along which some structures for outdoor free body sports activities are installed. The “Tempietto di San Donato” welcomes you, originally an oratory annexed to the Church of Santa Maria di Vignola, now a small temple dedicated to peace, frescoed by Giancarlo Balzani as a tribute to Sogliano and Picasso. Inside the park there are 2 structures reproduced based on drawings made by Leonardo Da Vinci called “concavities”, instruments used by the shepherds of Romagna in the sixteenth century to amplify the power of their horn and communicate better. Visitors have the opportunity to interact and activate the acoustic propagation of traditional sounds similar to those emitted by the shepherds’ horns. A box with books for free exchange has recently been installed in compliance with the lending project (Little Free Library project). In the highest part of the park, the “Yew” by G. Pascoli was planted on the initiative of the Sogliano Elementary Schools. The area has a parking lot.
