The Laterza ravine is one of the largest canyons in Europe and extends for 12 km between eroded rock walls and whitish limestone walls over 200 m high. and there are numerous cavities. Man has inhabited the ravines since prehistoric times. Here there were ancient churches, industrial activities and the remains of ancient civilizations such as the Greek and Roman ones. From a naturalistic point of view, in the Gravina there are Quercus trojana woods. The undergrowth is very rich, the orchids are very colourful.

The Cathedral of Montescaglioso, Mother Church of SS. Peter and Paul, was consecrated in 1823 following the collapse of the old medieval church in 1776.
