An early Christian church, probably built over a pre-Christian sanctuary, stood on the site of today's cathedral square from the 4th or 5th century. The name of the castle stems from the term “Torciara”, literally “wine press”, as in the Middle Ages, this area this area was renowned for its vineyards and olive tree groves.
