Between the Bolzano Gate and the banks of the Passer River, there used to be a natural meander where the sand from the Passer River was deposited. For this reason, the square built there was called Sandplatz (Sand Square). Here – next to the Bolzano city gate – is one of Merano's oldest inns: the former Hotel "Erzherzog Johann," later renamed the Hotel "Esplanade." Until 1913, some of the building's rooms housed the post office. Today, the renovated "Esplanade" is lined with buildings, shops, and public offices.

The Rametz Castle winery in Merano is one of the most traditional wineries in South Tyrol. Grapes have been cultivated here since 1227, and Pinot Noir has been cultivated since 1860 – the first Pinot Noir vines in all of South Tyrol. The special climate in Merano and the permeable soils of the moraine hill on which the castle stands provide ideal conditions for cultivation. Today, 10 hectares of vineyards surrounding the castle are planted with Pinot Noir, Riesling, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines are predominantly supported by Guyot trellises, using only weather-resistant chestnut posts instead of the concrete posts commonly used today. The cellars of Rametz Castle are also particularly noteworthy. The large cellar dates back to the 18th century and is built entirely of stone blocks, where the large oak barrels are stored. In the small cellar dating back to the 12th century, the precious barrique wines are aged in small oak barrels. Rametz Castle also houses a collection of historical winemaking tools and equipment, reflecting the winery's long tradition in a museum-like setting. Opening Hours: In winter, Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Restaurant: Tuesday to Saturday, 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Sunday, 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. In summer (from March 31, 2025), Monday to Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Guided tours: Individual visits to the museum and wine tastings are always possible during opening hours. At the Riedingerhof in Merano, young winemaker Hansi Verdorfer runs the winery with great passion. Merano, known for its centuries-old tradition as a spa town and as a classic South Tyrolean wine-growing region, offers ideal conditions for viticulture. The grapes thrive particularly well in the Obermais district, where the Naif talus cone creates fertile soils and the climate is almost Mediterranean. Originally a fruit and wine-growing business, the Riedingerhof has increasingly developed into a hospitality business over the years. Nevertheless, the Verdorfer family has never given up their passion for viticulture. Hansi Verdorfer cultivates grapes on his own slopes and produces his own premium wines on the farm. For him, tending the vineyards, harvesting the grapes, working in the cellar, and the weekly wine tastings with guests are very special moments that he lives and shares with passion. Guided tours and opening hours: Upon request. More information at https://www.altoadigewines.com/en/winegrowers/riedingerhof/86-197519.html.

In 1860, the planting of cedars, pines and linden trees and the creation of walking paths began. On the occasion of a visit by the Austrian imperial court and in honor of Empress Elisabeth's daughter, the park was initially named "Marie-Valerie Park" in 1870. In the following years, it was embellished with water features and a music pavilion. The marble statue of the Empress was erected in 1903. Today, the park is called "Elisabeth Park" and is part of the summer promenade.
