The Scaliger Castle of Malcesine was probably built before the birth of Christ, while other sources report a construction date of around 500 AD. The castle was destroyed by the Franks in 590 and subsequently rebuilt. Over the centuries, the rulers of this magnificent castle changed hands several times. In 1902, the castle was declared a national monument.

A beautiful, well-preserved castle. From there, you have a perfect view of the lake. However, we found the entrance fee to be expensive.

The Scaliger Castle (Italian Castello Scaligero) in Malcesine is a hilltop castle in the Italian municipality of the same name on the eastern shore of Lake Garda in the province of Verona. The first settlement in this area has been documented since the Chalcolithic era through pile dwellings, and numerous finds of rock carvings have been preserved from the Bronze Age. Towards the end of the 1st century B.C. In the 4th century BC, Torri (then “Tulles”) became part of the Roman Empire. This is confirmed by excavation finds of coins from the imperial period and many still existing district names such as Le Sorti (Sortes) and Il Salto (Saltus). After its collapse, various Germanic peoples spread along the banks of the “Benacus”, as Lake Garda was called at that time. From the 6th century onwards, various groups of Goths and Lombards settled on the “Veronese side” (i.e. east side) and on the slopes of Monte Baldo. Towards the end of the 9th century, the Franks invaded this area.
