A few kilometers north of Castelfranco Emilia, Villa Sorra is a historic Emilian residence owned by the neighboring municipalities. It is surrounded by a splendid garden of considerable size, in Romanesque style.

Municipality of around 33,000 inhabitants in the province of Modena, bordering Bologna, Castelfranco Emilia has been inhabited since pre-Roman times, when the Ligurians and then the Etruscans settled there. Renowned for being the home of tortellini and with some splendid museums such as the archaeological one, Castelfranco owes its name to the medieval foundation of the "Borgo Franco" (or "Castello Franco") by the people of Bologna in 1226, who built a fortified settlement to defend themselves by the people of Modena.

The dam can be traveled on by bike or on foot and its function is to safeguard the surrounding areas from the flooding of the Panaro.

The Malvasia Castle dates back to the end of the sixteenth century and is characterized by an accentuated horizontal trend, the only vertical elements are the towers.
