From 1966 to 1992 - almost 30 years - US battlefield weapons were stored in this facility and guarded by US units. It sounds harmless at first, but it is not when you consider that these were tactical, nuclear artillery shells (combat weapons) that would have been fired at Soviet soldiers from German soil using German rockets in the event of war. In addition to many deaths, entire areas of the country would have been contaminated by nuclear weapons. As long as the facility was active, it was guarded exclusively by US teams; German soldiers only had very limited access. The end of the Cold War led to the dismantling of the facility. Now the area around the facility has become a local recreation area, and the bunkers themselves are an accessible attraction that also attracts numerous graffiti sprayers.

There used to be a water mill there, which was first mentioned in a document in 1148. It soon came into the possession of Itzehoe Abbey, and for the villages of Overndorf and Grönhude, which were also owned by the abbey - today districts of Kellinghusen - there was a mill obligation to Springhoe. This also applied to the monastic subjects in the Aukrug villages, who were not allowed to use the royal Bünzer water mill.
