The TERRA.vita Nature and Geopark, originally the Northern Teutoburg Forest-Wiehengebirge Nature Park, is a nature and geopark in south-west Lower Saxony and north-east North Rhine-Westphalia. According to the "Association of German Nature Parks", the term TERRA.vita should make it clear that "everything comes from the earth". The Northern Teutoburg Forest - Wiehengebirge Nature Park was established in 1962 and covers a total area of around 1500 km², the low mountain ranges of the Teutoburg Forest and the Wiehengebirge (including the western edge of the Wesergebirge) as well as most of the Osnabrücker Land (including some lower-lying areas in the district Osnabrueck). In 2001, TERRA.vita was the first German nature park to be recognized as a European Geopark. The park has been part of the UNESCO Geoparks network since 2004. It only became a national geopark in 2008. Finally, on November 17, 2015, UNESCO officially recognized it as a UNESCO Global Geopark. This recognition was extended for another four years in September 2019.
