Carsten Niebuhr was a German mathematician, cartographer and research traveler in the Danish service. Niebuhr was the first to use the lunar distance method on the mainland to determine longitude. With this he achieved excellent results for the northern Red Sea. With the help of his map, Captain Holford dared to look for the sea route from Calcutta to Suez in 1772.
