The Alfsee was artificially created to regulate the water level of the Hase River and to facilitate agriculture in the Hase floodplains. This recreational lake is dammed by this dam. From here, you have a fantastic view of the large reservoir. Walking across the dam is definitely worth it.

Alfsee, located southeast of Alfhausen, a few hundred meters east of the B 68, can be reached from this federal highway and from the Neuenkirchen-Vörden junction of the A 1, which runs just to the east. Rieste train station, served hourly from Bremen (via Delmenhorst) and Osnabrück, is only about 1,800 meters from Alfsee.

The 330 m long overflow sill, the inlet of the Alfsee, was built in 1974 with a 10 hectare settling basin. This is where sand and alluvial particles that would worsen the water quality of the lake are supposed to settle. The outlet structure was also built in 1974.

The feeder to the Alfsee near Bramsche in the Osnabrück district of Lower Saxony is located between meadows and fields. It is a stretch of river, the section of which is open to fishing runs from the lock at Sögeln to the Dreihorst bridge. The towns of Hesepe, Rieste and Alfhausen are in the immediate vicinity. The river meanders leisurely through fields and meadows through the open landscape. It is about 15 to 20 meters wide. Apart from a few tourists who go for a walk here, the feeder is very quiet and is surrounded by the dam, on which sheep often graze. The feeder is a canal. The Alfsee is in the immediate vicinity and has numerous species of fish and water birds. The canal banks are lined with reeds and water lilies. The feeder is artificially created and comes from the Hase, a small river near the Alfsee. Access to the feeder is largely free and allows for problem-free fishing. The canal is about 2.5 meters deep.

I didn't realize that the Alfsee is not a natural lake. It is ultimately just a very large rainwater retention basin.

It's best to drive on top of the dike instead of on the small pavement below.
