The Ramsar Convention, initiated by UNESCO, aims to ensure international cooperation in the protection of wetlands. 74 percent of wetlands are threatened.[1] Important remaining wetlands include the Pantanal, the floodplains of Bahr Aouk and Salamat, the Everglades, the Okavango Delta, the bayous, and the Wadden Sea.

The bathing area at Lake Lanker has a 100 m wide beach with a large sunbathing area. There are several benches to sit on, a playground, a kiosk with an outdoor terrace and toilet, and a barbecue area that can be rented.
