Lake Bordesholm is a popular local recreation area. A well-maintained path, around 7 km long, runs mostly along the shore of the 70 hectare lake and is ideal for walking, jogging or cycling. On the west bank is the huge monastery church, which is reminiscent of the former Bordesholm monastery.

If you don't know what the abbreviation "FFH" in the highlight name means: It is a "Flora-Fauna-Habitat area", named after a Europe-wide EU law for nature and landscape protection from 1992. It is officially called "Directive 92/43/EEC on the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora", which adequately describes its meaning and purpose. In order to be designated as such an FFH area, special requirements must be met so that plants (flora) and animals (fauna) can be protected in this habitat. In Germany alone, there are already more than four and a half thousand FFH areas.

Bordesholm Monastery Island The monastery founded in 1125 in Neumünster by Vicelin in Neumünster moved to Bordesholm in 1330. The canons secured an island in Lake Bordesholm with three dams and built a church and monastery building on it. The Bordesholm Monastery Church is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and can be visited unless something else is going on there. The monastery parish offers tours of the monastery church and the vaulted cellar with the art historian Nils Claussen. Tours for groups are offered as well as special age-appropriate programs for school classes. The cost is €30 for groups of up to 20 people, and €1.50 for each additional person. The pier can also be used as a swimming area. Always open Wed-Sun from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. (depending on weather conditions and number of visitors)

The church is free to visit, there is also a vaulted cellar and a museum. There is a free car park opposite. Also a good starting point to walk around the lake.
